SLJ -Tānerore - Mountains, beach and nature, all in one!

Hello Viewers!

Welcome back to my blog.

Finally! Here's a second SLJ post!

For those who don't know, the Summer Learning Journey (SLJ) is a set of activities that you can complete over the summer holidays. As you do posts, you get points and there are some excellent prizes up for grabs. You can also earn points by commenting! So if you're a SLJ participant this year, drop down below and leave a comment!

Today, I did an activity called Tānerore. Tānerore is the son of Tama-nui-te-ra and represents the shimmering air in the light when he performs a haka to his mother. The shimmer represents the movements of the hands in haka and other waiata called wiriwiri. You can find it here on the SLJ Blog.

I had to make a kowhaiwhai that represents summer. A kowhaiwhai is a repetitive Māori pattern.

I worked hard on my kowhaiwhai and tried to use lot's of symbolism, it was a really fun activity and I enjoyed doing it a lot.

What kind of patterns do you like?
What kind of places do you see kowhaiwhai?

Enjoy!

Kei runga noa atu koe! You're awesome!

Thank you for sharing your response to the Tānerore activity on the Summer Learning Program for day 3. I really liked how you incorporated the physical shape of the mountains, sun and waves into your kowhaiwhai. It made it very easy for me to identify the different patterns. I also love the fact that you have created more than just one piece of kowhaiwhai that was required of you for this activity. It tells me that you are very eager to learn. Can you tell me, did it take you long to create this? You could also think about maybe colouring it in and framing it to display it in your house.

I look forward to hearing back from you in the comment section below.

    1. Hello Kiana! Thanks so much for commenting on my blog. I would say that my kowhaiwhai took a fair amount of time to create. For me, it was hard to repeat the pattern again because I had to try to make it the same as the first time I drew it. Colouring does sound good! I will think about it, but for the time being I think I'll leave it black and white. Framing it also sounds like a cool way to show what I've done, thanks for the suggestions. Have you created a kowhaiwhai before?

      Thanks again!
      Mia
