Summer learning journey! Week 3 day 1 - The hot hot summer! P.s I have a video ;)

Hey Bloggers!
Hope you have had a wonderful holiday so far, and you know what? Christchurch is really getting a temperature, yesterday got about up to 30 degrees! (that is quiet hot for us)

Hmm, what is the best time to come and travel here?
I don't know, maybe spring would be nice!

The summer learning journey site says...

On your blog, tell us what time of year you think is best for tourists for come and visit. Be sure to share at least three things that tourists could do while they were here in NZ.

South Island

Well to answer your question there I think that about in the middle/early September to october were the cherry blossoms (down south) are in full bloom, Christchurch normally has it's blossoms in September, while places like Ashburton and down south more are more into October. You can come around in Christchurch at Hagley Park which is located near the city center. Ashburton Domain and gardens are also good places to go too.

There are also different activities like skiing and snowboarding. If you go a bit earlier the ski fields still may be open in early September.

North Island

In the north island (the same period of year, Spring) it can get quiet warm and it is a great time to spend it outdoors, you can go to different scenery, and Auckland will make it a great place to walk around near the sky tower. You can also spend your time at also One tree hill, that also has a park you can visit.

So that was my ideas, sorry but I didn't know much about the north island since I don't live there but I had some rough idea.

Ok let's move onto...

You are my sunshine!

On your blog, list five different things that we can do to protect ourselves from the sun this summer!

Here is a video that I made about being sunsmart.

Enjoy!

Summer learning journey - week 2 Day 5 Activty 2

Hello bloggers!

Today I am back with a new post!

What about we go swimming in some rivers today!
But make sure that the rivers aren't polluted
here is two rivers (does it count as a stream?) that has been polluted in New Zealand.

Enjoy!

River/streams name : Karamu stream
Location : Karamu, Hawke's bay
What are doing to help/ reduce the pollution? : LAWA (Land Air Water Aotearoa) are testing the water of the rivers to help with the pollution.

River/streams name : Heathcote river
Location : Christchurch
What are doing to help/ reduce the pollution? : They are thinking, instead of putting the sewage in rivers they can hold them in tanks for a while, when the system died down they can treat it and put in back in again.

Summer learning journey - Activity 1, Day 4

Hello Bloggers!

I am back today with another post, for the summer learning journey, hope you have had a great holiday day so far.
Well we can't waste any time, because we are jumping to Milford Sound.
Here is a quick snappy video that will take you through the reason why I have chosen to go on the helicopter ride there.
Underneath the video I will write down all the text that is added in the video if it's a bit too fast to read.

Enjoy!

Why have I chosen the helicopter?
I am pretty small, on foot is a bit hard. The boat could be an option, but I don't really want to be on it for 3 hours. But the helicopter, it's perfect for me. It has really good sites from high above. It will be something that I have never experienced before and it looks pretty relaxing. So that's why I think in the air is good for me!

Summer learning journey - Activity 1 - Week 2 Day 3

Hello bloggers!

I am back with another activity finished, just to note I have been busy and I will try to keep updated.
I will try to finish activity and comment on all your blogs too.

Today I have done Activity 1

The instructions say to

'Tell us on your blog whether you are a night owl or a early riser, then tell us about the rest of your family'

So here it is

Enjoy!

I am a early riser since I wake up at roughly from 6 to 7 o'clock, I am not able to stay any later than 11 o'clock.
My mum, is also a early riser that wakes every single day at about 6:20 a.m to make both me and our brother's lunch, if in the weekends she wakes up about at 8 at the latest.
My brother, Kyle is a very early riser and sometimes wakes up even earlier than me, but he goes to bed earlier too.
My dad, he... I'm not quiet sure how to explain, but here it goes.
My dad is like a broken sleeper, he has a couple options.
1. he goes to bed early, wakes up in the middle of the night until about 2-5 o'clock in the morning then goes back to sleep and wakes up at ten.
2. He goes to bed late and wakes up late too
3. goes to bed late then wakes up early, but takes a nap from about 1 - 5 in the afternoon.

So that's all of us (well not all because there are 9 of us in the house... sometimes 12)

I'll see you in my next post!
Bye! >u<

Summer learning journey - Activity 2&3 Week 2 Day 2

Hello Bloggers!

Merry Christmas everybody!

I hope you are having a great Christmas holiday, but guess what!

My Summer learning journey still continues!

Today I have done Activity 2 and 3,

Enjoy!

Activity 2

For this activity you are asked to think of someone who is very tough and strong. They can be someone who you know personally or they can be a character that you have read about in a book, seen in a movie, or on a television show.

On your blog, tell us about this person. Who are they? Why are they, in your opinion, so strong and tough?
I have chosen

Mika

Mika is a friend of mine who is a year older, she is a very strong person, mentally and physically. She is a wonderful kind person, with a strong heart and for determination. I think that Mika is very strong because even when she's hurt she gets back up again, and even with words, she stands tall and proud. She is also physically very tough too, and sometimes can do some things that can hurt us without realising, although she makes sure she is sorry and makes sure we are ok. She is very strong in her learning as well in art, she is spectacular!

So I think that Mika is the one who is so Strong and tough. Someone that I look up to sometimes.

Hooked On Books Week

This week was Hooked on Books week and we got a book every single day, as well as having book character day on Thursday.

I think my favorite book would be Laugh your head off 4 ever, even though I didn't get to hear the teachers read it but some of my friends told me about it.

These are all the books that we got in our class.

Persuasion Writing

Hello bloggers!
This week is book week so we have been getting a new book every single day.

Today we got the book Goldfish boy and we had to do a persuasive speech/writing about do you agree that parents need to get fined if they take their kids of school for a day?
I disagreed and this is why

Do you agree or disagree?

Could you feedback on my writing and how I could improve it?

This is my Persuasion speech
Enjoy!

Hi I am Mia and I think that parents shouldn’t get fined for taking their kids off school. I have three points to argue with. One, that they shouldn’t get fined that much money for it. Two, Why kids should be able take days off school. Three, about the education it could provide.

Parents shouldn’t need to get fined that amount of money. £60, $120 in NZ money is a huge amount of money! It’s only a day and why does it need to be so much money? It could be even worse like court or even larger amounts of money. According to BBC on average there is 12 penalties per 1,000 children.

Some kids in school have technical difficulties whether it is being bullied or feeling like they are behind everyone else, and sometimes taking a break can help with the stress and pain to calm the child down. Even after consulting a teacher or principle the child may have to suffer going through the steps. Having less stress can help with the child's education when they are calm and happy. Some kids at school and develop to have anxiety or depression when in an older age and can suffer from it. That’s why I think that having a break affects children's education.

Even taking one or two days off school can make a big difference, and when they come back from their trip or holiday they might’ve changed hugely in their education, they may be more calm about school and they may be more fresh and better focus could be developed.

Education. Different kids have different ways of seeing learning and other things. So taking a break of school can make a big difference in their learning. Education is everywhere, whether it is outside of school or other countries. For example taking a trip to another country a kid could learn all about it, it’s culture, traditions and much more things than learning at school. Taking a trip could put a child out of it’s comfort zone and face challenges that you could never do in school. Being outside of their comfort zone can release the child's passions and strengths, and to teachers, that kind of information can help with what they could work on next.

Some teachers say that going to Florida is much more educational then being at school for a sports lesson. They also say that less children in a classroom get more one on one conferences with the students, but that’s another story. Although they say that it doesn’t do any harm so it should be allowed. One teacher said that a child went on a trip for a little while for a ski trip and he finished all his work while he was there. When he returned he was happy and the teacher was happy too.

In conclusion I think that they should be allowed to take their kids of school without any fines. It’s a big learning pit for your children and they get the opportunities that you didn’t. So they should be allowed.

Thank you

Taking flight

Hello Bloggers!
These past few weeks in Rimu we have been working on recounts.
This is one of the First recounts that I did so it isn't as good.
From this recount I have learnt:

You can use descriptive language in your recount to make it more interesting as long you don't turn it into a story.

What I found challenging:

Add in emotive words and adding descriptive language.

What's my next step:

To keep using recounts and adding descriptive language, and making sure I have emotive words.

Here is the recount I wrote:

A Messy week!

Hello bloggers!

This week I have had a really messy week. Well for a start it was a public holiday on Monday and on top of that I missed Tuesday morning because of my music festival rehearsal. As you might know about the music festival there are three days for the concert. There are also rehearsals for the schools performing on that day. Well, I have to go to every single rehearsal because I'm playing the accompanet (means like the back music) this causes me to be behind on some of my work in school that I miss.

Despite it being a very busy week we have been doing athletics in the afternoons. Including discus, shotput, sprints, high jump and long jump. I was really excited on Tuesday afternoon because I had finally jumped a meter on high jump (a meter is the minimum score to go to zones) Hopefully if I get get better I can jump more than a meter.

So here's a question for the audience.

How's your week going, what have you been doing at school?

Thank you for reading my blog!

Novel Study!!!! (Yay!)

Hello bloggers!

My first blog post in two weeks!
I know what you're thinking, "Mia hasn't blogged ages!"
Yep that's right, normally I would be blogging in the holidays at least once about what happened on my holiday, but this time... no I haven't.
But that's ok because the school term has started and this week we have started doing our Novel Study!
My group is reading "Anne Frank" (or as you might know, "The Diary Of A Young Girl")
I have read about a quarter of the book but it's sounding like something goings to happen to Anne.

Anne Frank is a real story that is made from Anne's diary, and all the things she did when she had her diary called Kitty. She got her diary when she was 12 and and tragically ended when she passed away at the concentration camp when she was fifteen.

Here is the book

My Reflection for term 3

Hi bloggers!
Yay! It's the last day of the term and I have written my extra long reflection, If you read my term 2 reflection you will know that I write a lot.
I will keep rack on my blog over the holidays and I will keep posting.
Well here is my reflection for term 3
Enjoy!

My Reflection for the term.

What have I enjoyed about this term?

This term I have enjoyed working in a collaborative group. It was something different to the
independent work we normally do and we have definitely become better as a whole group together.
I think that I really liked the inquiry that we have been doing this term because it’s like a big topic
for all of us to focus on one topic and to present it, I’m going to work hard in the holidays too, like you said to ask or ring up some people to see what they know, gather the information. I have enjoyed writing adventure narratives because I really like them and I think that I am getting better at the characterization part then I used to, I find adventure writing fun and full of excitement!

What you are proud of?

I am proud of this term on my adventure writing, as I said before I really like adventure writing and
I think that I have gotten better at the characterization. I am also proud of Maths, the way that I
have learnt a quite a bit o variety of graphs this term, for example, stem and leaf graphs, box
and whisker plots, and more. I am very proud of my reading because I have been on track on
my activities and making sure I get enough finished before the end of the term.

How have you shown our HERO qualities? (Give at least 3 examples of this and explain fully)

I have shown H this term for drinking lots of water, keeping hydrated. I know, I wrote about this
last term as well but H is one of those things that there isn’t much to write about. I think that
drinking water does help you, and this I have been keeping my drink bottle next to me an long
writes and other activities. I think that running is important too, so when it’s a good day to go
outside I go out and run! My dad also says that getting vitamin D from the sun is important so I
think that I have gotten outside as much as I can, even in the mornings when I have nothing to do.

I have shown E this term because I have been enthusiastic about the learning that we have
been doing, I was really excited to learn about the greenhouse effect and I have gathered a lot
of information. I am really enthusiastic about the wearable arts we are going to be continuing
next term, I think I might work on it a little bit in the holidays.

I have shown R this term because I have being kind and helpful, I think that I have been helpful
just in general, and I like to help anybody who needs it. I also think that it fits into being kind,
I haven’t been mean to anybody (not that I want to anyway) and if I do by accident I know it’s
always nice to apologize.

I have show O this term for being open minded. I love to be open minded and think outside of
the box. On tuesdays while the year 7 and 8’s went to tech I would be really interested about light and color, I made lots of questions and hypotheses about it.

What hasn’t gone well for me this term? Why?

I think that maybe I wasn’t concentrating so much on work, I’m not quite sure, but I think that
I might’ve gone a little bit off track sometimes. I probably need to concentrate more on what
I’m doing and to keep focus, but I still want to have a little bit of fun.

What have I found challenging? Why?

I have found collaborating with a group challenging because it was really hard to get my group together. I found out that when collaborating in a group, there might be times we're some people go
off track and don’t do anything, so I think that if I am leading and keeping everyone together, I need
to make sure everyone is giving some ideas.

My focus for next term is keep on track and keep focused because I need to get a lot finished in one week.

How do I read Stem and Leaf Graphs?

Hello everybody!

This week in Rimu we have been working on statistics work since we had a Maths test this week.
I was wondering, how do I read Stem and Leaf graphs? After a while I realized Stem and Leaf Graphs aren't that hard to read. Since I have learnt I am going to share it with you!

Here is my Drawing that I made

If that was confusing then I will tell you right here.

On the left were it says Stem you can see the number 2, and on the right side were it says Leaf you can see the number 5.

now 5 is in the ones column, and 2 is in the tens column, so that means it is twenty (from the Stem) five (from the Leaf) and that requires to all the numbers.

The Cave

Hello bloggers!
Today we did a long write for 55 minutes, this was my Draft about the Cave.
I think I did really well on my introduction because I added lot's of setting description.
To improve my story I need to add more to the conclusion and Resolution.

I would love to hear from you about what you think I should add to my story on my improvement session.

Enjoy!

Title: The Cave

Lush green forest filled the land, and happy little animals ran around in the grass. Squirrels clambered up the trees and the fruits on the bush's we're ripe red, ready to be picked. The smell of beautiful flowers drifting in the breeze. In the distance you can hear two pairs of shoes slap slap, one running, and one walking. You can also hear the birds chirping in the background tweet tweet.

“Hurry up!” June said as she ran full speed across the pathway, June groaned and started to keep the pace, she tripped and fell face forward onto the floor. “I told you you should be careful” Erika said trying to hold in her giggles. “We should take a break, we’ve been walking for hours” Erika said sitting down. “Um, maybe we shouldn’t” June pointed to a giant black cloud rising in the background. “Fine fine” Erika said hopping to her feet. The dark clouds we're already above them and the trees scowled at them slapping their branches. They found an opening to a cave and sat down dripping with water. “ARHHH!” June shouted as she tried again and again to light a fire “useless!” June said as she threw the stick to the cave floor. Suddenly a grunt rung in the cave, WHAT WAS THAT! Erika said through to Junes mind I don’t know suddenly a black shadow came running full speed out of the cave  and swallowed them whole, swallowing June and Erika's scream.

Roughly an hour after they have been taken away June was busy trying to get out. It was dark, and gloomy, and you could smell that this was old and rusted. The cold metal bars pushed June back forcing her to stay put. The sound of scuttling of rats and mice around the corners, and the BANG of someone in the horrifying place. later June realized they weren't were they were before. Where am I!!!! June said to Erika Do remember the old tale? Erika asked to June The one about the forest and then they get taken away or something? June replied Yeah excattly, but don’t you remember that our great grandma and our great aunt are twins? And they we're the ones taken away, maybe that has something to do with us! Erika said excitingly Whatever your idea is I want to get out June replied.

Wait a minute! Erika said we can pick the lock with our pins in our hair! Genius! June said and she pulled her hair pin out I’ll try! It took a couple tries but she was able to open it. “YES!” June shouted throwing her arms in the air. “Shhh not so loud June, they might hear us” Erika said her finger to her lips. They got each other out and tiptoed around the pathways, but whenever they though they came to a entrance it was a dead end. “How are we supposed to get out?” June asked, “ I dunno” Erika shrugged “Ok, I thought you were the genius, looks like your not right now” June said.

They kept walking and walking until they came to a big room. There was an ancient painting and writing on the front. “To escape the tunnel, two must be one, and one must be two” Erika said thinking “well how’s that going to help!” June said. “Well we are twins and maybe we are meant to be one person?” Erika said, “Like, that's going to happen” June siad. “We could try?” Erika said, they thought for a moment then held hands and said “two must be one, two must be one, two must be one!” they both said. Suddenly a glow came from their necklaces and some of the rocks we're glowing. Follow the glow Erika said to June kay June replied.

They followed the glow and magically they we're at the end. The rain had stopped and there was clear pathway back home. “YAY!” June said running around “Don’t fa “Ouch” june said as she stood back up “I told you!” Erika said, and they both laughed, they had made it out smoothly. But all Erika could think about is her book she left at the Cave opening, she knew it was ancient and old. Probably special as well but the main thing was is it gone or is it safe? But Erika just shook her head and kept moving forward.

The Ki-O-Rahi Tournament

The Ki-O-Rahi Tournament

Hello bloggers!
Today I have a post about the Kio-O-Rahi tournament.

Some of us went to the Ki-O-Rahi tournament at Gilberthorpe school a couple days ago.
There were four other schools that had come, there were four fields that we played in.
One round we had to ref a game and we would all spread out among the four feilds with pairs or groups of three with a whistle.
Overall I think that the Ki-O-rahi game was really fun, I think it was a great way to get running around for a change.
I think what challenged me most was trying to run away with the ball. Sometimes I would get the ball but I wouldn't run away fast enough because I would get tagged.

Here are some photos

If shoes could talk they would have Diaries...

Hello Bloggers!
Welcome to my blog, today I am posting a blog about out ten minute writing session!
We had ten minutes to write about if shoes could talk, or at least do things that humans can do.
I think that I have done good on having a sense of humor in my story.
To improve my writing I think that I should put more similes, descriptive phrases, metaphors, and interesting words.

I would love you to give me some feedback one my story to see what kind of similes, or descriptive phrases I could add and keep for another time!
This is my story about If your shoes could talk
Enjoy!

If your shoes could talk

Dear Diary,

It was my nightmare… You’d never guess, it was cross country day, AND they had to
run for like 3 km! Gosh by the end of the first kilometer sweat was pouring down his/her (I don’t know genders! Shoes don’t have them I think) legs, and I was as wet as ever, stinky as ever. It was like elephant dung mixed with old socks from the garbage and oh, much more other disgusting things!

The second kilometer they came to some hay bales and other obstacles. You’ll never guess… my human tripped over a hay bale and me and my partner went tumbling down the gigantic hay HILL! Plus when my human put them on again our backs we're full hay and whenever the humans feet moved inside our backs, the hay would tickle so much! So me and my partner thought up a really clever plan, we started to toss our humans feet about and we made him trip, and we shouted at him and he got such a fright that our human nearly had a heart attack. Oh what FUN!

I would say it was pretty fun for us, although now I’ve got soap in my eyes from washing, and my eyes are all red. But besides that we had a great time fooling around with our human.
